Peer support group empowers people with disability

Queenslanders with disability living on the Sunshine Coast are forming new connections, gaining empowerment, and advocating through the Queenslanders with Disability Network (QDN) Peer Support Groups local chapter and with Disability Action Week later this month, these events are in the spotlight.

Monthly peer group meetings are gaining popularity across the state, with the Sunshine Coast group now offering a safe, welcoming space at its Parrearra location for individuals to share experiences, discuss challenges, and explore solutions to issues that affect their lives.

Led by and for people with disability, these groups focus on key topics such as navigating the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), accessing healthcare, housing, and addressing local community concerns.

The groups serve as platforms for advocating change in areas like transport, education, employment, and human rights all through a local lens and lived experience.

QDN’s event Coordinator Jayde Crossley said, “Those unable to attend in person can join our online peer support group that meets on the third Monday of each month.”

Joining a Peer Support Group offers numerous benefits. Members build meaningful relationships, gain valuable insights, and find support to navigate life with disability.

The groups also provide opportunities to participate in social activities and contribute to a collective voice advocating for improved accessibility and inclusion.

QDN operates groups throughout Queensland, and the Sunshine Coast is among the regions benefiting from this invaluable free service.

With QDN committed to creating spaces where people with disability connect, share, and lead change in their communities, you can lend your support by becoming an official member via https://qdn.org.au/membership/.
